My Story Board

These are my story boards a bit tatty but are what I was planning to make the comic from.

i used these even after I couldn't not make all the frames and images.

My Evaluation

I am a bit dissapointed with my comic, because I didn't not account for the time I had and had to change alot also I never added any of my buttons which I really wanted too!!. the story was shortened to well it doesn't really have an ended and looks half baked.
I am pleased how ever with the look I have achieved , the images look constant and in the same style. and all give the look I am trying to achieve. I eventually got used to flash and managed to make motions which didn't look cheep and tacky.
I ended up loosing one of the images which would of been a image which would have been zoomed into many times to achieve different looks of parts of the city, i ended up quickly drawing it on the last day, but was happy enough with the result.
If i had a week longer I reckon I could have completed it to the standard I originally wanted.

i wish i slowed down some scenes and finished one off ,
the scene with the helicopters flying out of the city should be slowed down
also the scene with the monster being shot in the city needed to be slowed down.
and that one with the monster should have faded with the smoke coming in.
I am very pleased that I managed to get to grips with flash and that i did manage to make the whole film very quickly once I got that hang of it.

I liked the fact i could contribute using hand drawn things and also use photo shop to add more colours or refine images , and i even learnt a style of drawing though it .

i enjoyed this project once it started to roll, and am glad I learnt how to use flash.

Callum and sasha did an evaluation for my comic

Evaluation of callum comic

I think the comic has a great colour balance being very attractive to watch, and in very interactive containing many buttons which bring you more into it and keep your attention focus.

However some of the speech bubbles do not show the entire sentence in it
so I  believe you should change this . as it will pretty much make it perfect

Some of my work

All the images below i drew in photo shop and turned the sections into png's so they could be manipulated.
The png file was useful because it allowed the images to have no back ground which made it easy to manipulate only the image and no back ground.

This is an image i animated for the turret to turn on top of the tank.
I created this i photo shop and made all the area's separate and saved them as png's.

I put 3 key frames in one on the left one in the middle and one at the right.

first key frame

second key frame

Third key Frame(image will load if you click it.

an image idraw in photo shop imported to flash and added other images, planes . and explosions via flash tools.

explosions made through flash
involving many key frames which made the explosions look gradual. and more effective and ral in a why.

Lizard/Hippo

This was the back ground image we worked up from.
Today we where given a totorial in mergeing  two pictures together makeing them look inplace on one another, we hot 2 images a hippos head and a lizard. we used the lizard as a back ground and put the hippos head in another layer and worked it into blending with the main image of the lizard .

Use free transform, and then shift to move it at the same scale/proportion, then move over the head of the lizard I added an adjustment layer of colour balance.
I added an adjustment layer of colour balance.  And Moved the colours ratios to +32 +82 -91. this was one of the best greens that went with the green originaly from the lizard.

Using a mask I deleted the removed and  faded parts of the hippo’s head to make it look more natural and in place.
Changing the opacity effected how strong the brush was

Using the stamp tool I covered over the nose with a section of the back ground.  Which covered up the lizard’s nose, covering it with a background

over all ithnk that is came out as well as i wanted because it looks all like one picture not loads of diffrent parts stuck onto a lizard.

this has also helped to progress my photoshop skills and i feel more confident using masks and adjustment layers.

Small animation through photo shop

This is a gif of the small animation i made through photo shop which took loads of layers on and off to create !

it moved left to right dancing, if you wish too see the file ask and ill send it too you woo.

Evaluation of my work

James dyers Evaluation
I really enjoyed the effort and progress made in James’s animation he has put a lot of time and thought in to his piece I really enjoyed the characters in his piece it’s a bit slow in some parts but a really good use of contrast and colours and good use of creative thinking for his animation. I am really impressed how he was managed to complete his work when he’s hardly been here, really good work James

The story.

The story is set in a normal city , just going about regular day, and astroids/meteors will be showen in space, once this hit the city a living creature will apear and start to reak havok about teh city. the city will be level and sirens going off everywhere.
while the civilians escape the military try to kill the monster down failing each time.it seems to get more agressive each time, when it final gets pinned and looks like the military is winning missiles rain down form the sky destroying everything and leaveing very little, but success the monster is finaly killed at the cost of a city. the camra will pan out showing the same angle as when the first ones came in but their willbe a few more, then it will zoom out showing earth in the centre and surrounded my meteors .

A twist i was thinking of adding was nukes where fired but then every countrie started war agianst each toher  destroying the world by them self, but ... its not as intresting as the ending i have chosen. in my opinion.

Traditonal and Digital methods

Traditional:
  • Unique - its easyier to get a unique feel to a  hand drawn image( i think personaly) where as  digitaly you can get cheep looking images which people say that looks "Photo shoped". plus smudgeing something with your hand is a bit diffrent form a photo shop tool. or even the ageing of art can do this.
  • Portable  - can draw on the spot , do not need to wait for load times or have a limit to how long you can draw for.
  • can get more textures - useing natural things cut or
  • achieve more natural looking effects -
  • add depth - movement oh your hands and  objects you can sue can create patterns or effects which make the picture more then just a picture and something that has a meaning to it.
  • Possibly cheeper - going into industry both need good tools. a real version of photo shop costs around £1000 , so pens pencils brushs and paperare probely cheeper. how ever, it could be possible to get it cheeper on the pc depending on where your going with it and waht spec's.

Digital:
  • eviromentaly friendly - no waste, no trees cut down to create them. cheeper in the long run even though fuel is being burnt.
  • Possibly cheeper, having all the bush's allready thier not needing to go out and buy loads of tools and specialist equiptment.
  • less hazards - no toxic substances, loads of tools that could be dangerous if left out wrong or used inaproprately
  • Long lasting - Saved to a hard drive can be backed up, will not wear away, tarnish , loose colours in light.
  • Easy to transport - can be sent in an email . dosnt need trucks or a transpoter to be paid so it is also cheeper in that sense too
  • Easy to mass produce -  for instance images , you can just  pressss print , even if you wanted to mass produce a picture you would ahve to scan it in so it was digital and then print it via that.
  • Easily editable - can come back to something years later whe the tools are ready or more advanced for waht you wanted.

Things i have used so far.

Traditional methods
i have used pen and paper to plan my story and create a story board.
Also i have drawn two of my main scenes and things on paper
and pre drawn things ive designed on the pc so i knew what id want.

Graphic pads -  this combines traditional with digital. this allows greater control and accuracy and also cutting out a process like scanning.

Digital methods

Photo shop - to drawn other scenes and keep teh same tones and even make a copy of the file and edit things on it to create the next scene.

Flash - to animate images and bring all the scenes together.

Scanner - i used the scanner to put in some of my images and edit them in photo shop.

I have managed to use a nice balance of both at the momment and and keeping the work contantish, and good. flash is a bit weird , but ill ge tused to it.

I would see a major disadvantage in only using one . as alot of traditional and digital methods melt quite well together and i would strong argue against only using one of them , although its completely drawing on  photoshop is completely diffrent from paper you can also achieve effects you cant  if you did it on paper . i think this is the same for most things. that have a digital and traditional side.

Typography

These are examples of typography, using tools in photo shop to structure  the pattern and shape

After learning how to bed words into shapes like below i realised, its kind of like comics and cartoons when they have wrods go in one ear as it narrows into a cone then come out of the other ear. which out saying anyhting its made an impact.
You know that it would mean thats gone straight though them.

Typography is interesting because you can give words an image. making a word shout without using an exclamation mark, and by putting it in an interesting shape you it makes it a lot more attractive to read and look at.
I believe it can also create a mood of the room, by making it red and pointy  it creates an image of hostility and sharpness.
by using a soft colour  and rounded words, it creates a nice pleasant atmosphere.

Also typography can be used to voice opinions , haveing one word stand out in a mist of other words which are related.

To me this poster is alot more exciteing then just seeing him. his face is covered in lyrics or ways to describe his music. but its more eye catching too and makes you wana take a look.
Typography is used in normal magazines too. if they where talking about over weight people they might use rounder letterings and fonts to empisise, what they are talking about.

Making a button and useing features.

Clicking where i want it to stop in the frames , I opened  window and the code snippet , and went into the time line navigation.
i added a stop time line to the farm I wanted which froze it their.

we then added a button by drawing a rectangle  clicking it so it was selected pressing f8 and choosing button. we then double clicked it which made the back ground pale out.

where the key frames usefully are you will see the up over down and hit actions. you can add what you want tot happen when iit does it , for example the button changing colour when you click it .  you can move it make it change colour or show signs when being hovered and over being clicked .

Effect on my comic

Buttons are going to be essential to my comic, after every image a button shall be their which will allow you to turn to the next section. or turn back , it could even create the possibility to create an alternate ending or a plot change though a choice in the comic.

Because I'm slightly behind , adding the plot twist seems less likely how ever . I have experimented to try and see if it was possible.
half way though I created two arrows which where different colours. Red and Blue.
By clicking the red button it took it to to the next  key frame.
where as , if you clicked the blue one it would skip the next 2 key frames and go to another scene.

Classic tweens and animation.

We all took the same image from the internet, changed the resolution , and pixels per inch.  so it would be right for an I pod.

We uploaded the image  onto flash after altering the image.

We changed the image into a  movie clip

Adding rulers so we can see the size and space we could work with we shrunk the image  so it fit between the ruler lines .
we added a key frame at 50 and increased the size of the image and put the tower in the centre of the  page while frame 50 was selected and added a classic tween.

this gave the image a zooming motion as the frames went up.

adding another 50 frames in front of the image just to let the image stand.

adding another key frame  50 ahead I moved the image to the left , to give the image a panning look once the classic tween is added.

In my comic ive also tried to make a rumble efect moveing the image alittle up and down, and also tilting it alittle. and repeating this.
As ive used flash more animating has got alittle easier. although  i sitll get lost in the missions of layers it can have.
zooming panning everything will be used to take in focus points , show a bigger pictures and more chaos.
add some action to it.
Definately usefull

Storyline's

Apocolypic/End Of The World  - I as thinking of making a storyline, a bit like a clover field and aliens mix, No main characters more a story line of how the world will end , and a slight twist at the end.

Cartoony -  about red and grey squirrels and how red are a dying breed because off the tyrant of the grey squirrels

  • Cashew - the main character a teen who is inspired by the tales of an old wise man , who talked about the glory days of the red squirrel empire.
  • General Grey - leader of the grey squirrels army

Marantz

How  to use it
Today we learnt how to set up the Marantz for recording sounds for our flash comics.
we learnt how to set up the power pack that connects into the side of the marantz. head phones plug in at the bottom and then we also know how to connect the microphone and switch one to use dependsing on the situation.
The presets are used so its easy to flick between settings e.g high-quality for an inter view, then low qualiity for constant recording and mid quility for surroundings.
We found out how to delete every thing on a hard drive so its hasn't got any unwanted stuff.
We learnt how to record sounds and  adjust the volume and stuff.

The plan
I have Decided not to use one for my interactive comic I have considered it but!, I believe I can get the noise from clips off the internet or though the flash archives.. Adding noise is essential to the atmosphere of the comic , creating the tension or mood and emphasizing what is happening.

The marants would benefit me if I required speech in my comic or maybe some more natural and environmental sounds.
This would not suit my ideal comic noises. I would like to  take some slightly surreal noises. which can be taken from the achieves or even websites on the internet.

Additional Research

creation of flash file for i phone state stage size

place a jpeg on layer one frame 1

how you created a shape on layer 2 - To create a shape use the shape tool or even use the mouse and brush, this is very much like Photoshop

how you created a new key frame  - Press F6 on the frame you want the image to be locked in, you can move the image you created anywhere you want. this means when it gets to that key frame , the image will be in taht position.

how you created a movie clip library symbol f8

how to create a classic tween - To create the classic tween you need to right click inbetween the key frames and then click classic tween by sdoing this itll fill the frames inbetween the key frames with motion, moveing the images slowly.

Interactive Comics - Photographical and drawn based

Dead on Arrival :
A digital comic I have found through google. it is photography based, the picture are black and white, in a sin city style of look.
Because of the comic being photograaphicaly based this comic would be faster to put together then a drawn animated one, because even just added an animation of someone liifting a drink you could take a few photos of the process, and the brain will ink it all together, so a start , mid-way  and finished image as min and it would still make sense to us.
Each page pealed when flicking through which was a nice interactive feature, and involved you more into the comic these were also click able if you didnt feel like flicking the pages your self.
using a nice looped music to give the comic a mood.
Their is also a small typography element where they have chosen a text and font to fit the  images and the syle of the comic

This image shows hoe the page foled as you flicked over a page.
This image shows the help button which letters would scroll out from which you can see the letters fully out in the next image down.
It also has a few more buttons.
In the bottom left thier are 2 which will skip a chapter back or forward, this would take it to a certain frame with a new value for that button each time.

Benifits of a photographical style
  • Quick
  • Easy to get into flash and put in order
  • Quick to make an animation
  • can even add some drawn in effects
  • Could give you alot less layers(confusion)
A photographical based interactive comic has a big bonus in being fast to put together .
Vreateing an animation with photography would require taking multiple pictures of a motion and then putitng them into an order, While the drawn style would require fidleing with many seperate objects and making sure it turns or moves in a realistic or smooth way.
the longest part id say of a photographical comic would be the buttons linking the pictures to one anotehr through it but in all alot faster then a drawn image.
If you wnat to jazz up a photo you cna take it into photo shop amke only certain colours show and then put it in giving a point of attention.
The typography element would be how the cleaverly snuck the wtireing onto the walls . like their being projected but they also to me give a feel like tehy wouldnt be tehir for the epople but just for me .

Hotel:

This  mad , crazy interactive comic, the story was made and explained by loads of little interactions like touching what they where doing or hovering over the characters. Would of taken an extremely long time due to the fact everything is drawen and their are many animations and reactions.
Alot of sounds where also used to keep you into the comic and also th ammuse you. the music would also show the mood .  fun, crazy, hostile  and the rest .

One of the interactive features was , everything you pressed caused a reaction for instance if you clicked a mans bag, he started to talk to another person, To achieve This, it would of  involved createing butons which would open up a Motion but also stop another or hide one.

In this image for instace the character was danceing, contantly till you pressed the button circled in the red , it was easy to find because it was also flashing another tone which brought your eye to it.

All though this was not the case with all of the comic, this one had multiple places to click all which lead to a diffrent thing , forinsance the man in the white coat, the letter and the man.

 Benefits of a drawn  style
  • Less limitations in ideas area
I enjoyed this comic.
I like all the animations and uniqueness it had and how well it was put together and easy to get about with thier buttons.
Although it would take alot longer to draw up an animation  like this, then the photographical one,  you can get alot more things into it and get more creative with it.
I mean you cant have people coming out of walls or their head opening in a photographical based one, or not as easily and the limits are the same as your imagenation.
You also wouldnt need a group of friends to pose and pose so their wouldnt be a delay if somone was a bit busy that day.
The time it would take is its biggest draw back and how long it would take to peice to gether the animations in flash . but ! it amy take time but you could realy do anything you like or almost.
